Valuation

Dark Datawrapper table for United Parcel Service (NYSE: UPS) showing valuation metrics and values, with red-highlighted Applied Market Premium 211.04%

Key Takeaways

  • Sustain of its quarterly dividend. ✔️

  • Healthcare logistics and B2B freight pivot. ✔️

  • Strong revenue per piece after reduced Amazon volume. ✔️

As it currently stands, the company stock is trading at a 211.04% premium to our proprietary estimate.

Excluding the fiscal year 2020 from our historical growth rate calculations was an essential adjustment for model accuracy in UPS’s case. The 2020 pandemic-driven surge heavily distorted the core financial metrics, creating artificial spikes that incorrectly implied triple-digit growth in metrics such as book value per share and earnings per share (EPS).

Including that anomaly inflated baseline expectations and masked the subsequent post-pandemic volume normalization. By anchoring our model to the 2021–2025 period, we remove these exaggerated figures to reflect a far more realistic, disciplined, and structurally sound trajectory for the company’s intrinsic valuation.

Risks

  • Facing strong competition from Amazon. ❌

  • Dividend payouts heavily affect free cash flow. ❌

  • Sustained annual EPS, Operating Cash Flow, and Revenue growth decline. ❌

Sustained Performance & Conclusion

Variables include:

  • Successful management of the dangers to their free cash flow. ⚠️

  • Capital expenditure payoffs related to its automation efforts. ⚠️

  • Sustaining double-digit revenue growth within high-margin specialized segments following acquisitions like AHG and Frigo-Trans. ⚠️

While UPS’s operational initiatives aim to lay the foundation for structural margin expansion, the fundamental metrics highlight significant headwinds. The company continues to contend with elevated cost structures, reduced operating cash flows, and persistent earnings headwinds.

Our adjusted baseline presents a far more realistic appraisal of UPS’s intrinsic trajectory, which currently appears to be trading markedly above its fair value.
