Albemarle Corporation (ALB) | Evaluating the Discount — September 2026

All the numbers presented in the article are taken directly from our dashboards.
Albemarle Corporation (ALB) is a Fortune 500 company that stands as a global innovator, producer and distributor of a diverse portfolio of engineered specialty chemicals, whose business operations are divided into three principal segments dealing with lithium compounds, bromine and bromine-based fire safety compounds, and catalytic agents.
Albemarle’s products are integral to numerous industries, including energy storage, petroleum refining, consumer electronics, construction, automotive, lubricants, pharmaceuticals, and crop protection. Their divisions supply lithium carbonate, hydroxide, and chloride alongside critical reagents like butyllithium—materials vital for manufacturing lithium-ion batteries found in electric vehicles and consumer electronics, as well as for high-performance greases, thermoplastic elastomers used in tires and plastics, and as catalysts for chemical reactions, organic synthesis in areas like steroid chemistry, vitamins, and pharmaceutical applications. An array of specialty chemicals, including elemental bromine, various bromides, and brominated powdered activated carbon, are deployed and utilized in chemical synthesis, fluids for oil and gas drilling, mercury emission control, water purification, and food processing. Finally, their range of catalytic agents are used in hydroprocessing, isomerization, and alkylation, alongside fluidized catalytic cracking (FCC) catalysts and additives, as well as organometallics and curatives.
Additionally, the company provides cesium products for chemical and pharmaceutical ends, zirconium, barium, and titanium for pyrotechnic devices, tertiary amines, which serve as key ingredients in surfactants, biocides, and sanitizers, offers expert technical services for the safe handling of reactive lithium products, and provides recycling solutions for lithium-containing by-products.
Operations
By late 2025 and early 2026, in continuation of their cost and productivity programs, Albemarle achieved approximately $450M in run-rate improvements for full-year 2025. Capital expenditures were down ~65% YoY. The company announced agreements to divest a controlling stake in its Ketjen refining catalysts business and the Eurecat joint venture, with combined expected pre-tax proceeds of roughly $660–670M.
The decision to idle Kemerton Train 1—a lithium hydroxide conversion facility in Australia—placing it into care and maintenance was announced in February of 2026. This followed earlier actions that had already put Train 2 into care and maintenance and halted expansion plans for Trains 3 and 4, framing the move as improving financial flexibility given cost challenges for Western hard-rock conversion relative to China.
The Ketjen controlling-stake sale, as well as the Eurecat sale closed the very next month. Proceeds were used in part for debt reduction.
At the Salar de Atacama in Chile, a significant operation under long-standing agreements with CORFO, the company submitted an environmental assessment permit for a commercial-scale Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) project; a pilot plant at La Negra had already demonstrated >94% lithium recovery.
An unfortunate fire occurred at the Greenbushes CGP3 plant (Talison joint venture) in June 2026. The plant later restarted (reported as August 1 in subsequent commentary), with the ramp to full run-rate delayed into early 2027.
By August 2026, strong results driven by higher lithium and bromine pricing and volumes, plus ongoing cost/productivity gains raised their full-year 2026 Specialties outlook. Energy Storage sales-volume guidance was adjusted to reflect the CGP3 delay. Capital expenditure outlook was reduced, as well.
Earlier in this month of September, Albemarle announced a CEO succession plan, where Ragnar Udd would be appointed President and CEO, effective February 2027, with current CEO Kent Masters to become Executive Chairman.
Valuation

Key Takeaways
Highly elevated growth metrics. ✔️
Demonstrated ability to flex conversion capacity and cost structure in response to market conditions. ✔️
Access to two of the world’s highest-quality lithium resources (Salar de Atacama, Greenbushes). ✔️
Albemarle stock is currently trading at a discount of 43.12% to our projected fair value estimate.
Risks
Negative average price performance over the projected period. ❌
Continued exposure to lithium-price volatility and the cost position of Western conversion assets. ❌
Execution and ramp risk. ❌
Factors leave the shares exposed to further swings in lithium pricing and the capital and permitting timelines attached to longer-dated growth projects. The combination keeps risk elevated, even as near-term operating results have shown improvement.
Sustained Performance & Conclusion
Conversion pf higher lithium and bromine pricing into free-cash-flow. ⚠️
Successful delivery of cost and productivity targets. ⚠️
Orderly progression of resource and technology options. ⚠️
How effectively the company balances near-term cash generation with the preservation of long-dated resource options will determine its value going forward. Its current price anticipates continued operational discipline and a constructive lithium demand backdrop, with delivery against those expectations determining whether the valuation holds. At these levels, the market is looking through the recent cycle for evidence that the cost and productivity actions, together with the quality of the underlying resources, can support durable returns across the range of lithium prices.
