All the numbers presented in the article are taken directly from our dashboards.
ZTO Express Inc. (HKEX: 2057) is a leading logistics provider in the People’s Republic of China, specializing in rapid parcel delivery and a range of supplementary value-added services. The company serves a broad clientele that includes e-commerce vendors, traditional businesses, and individual users requiring expedited shipping solutions. It operates primarily through a network-partner model in which ZTO provides the core line-haul transportation and sorting infrastructure while local partners manage first-mile pickup and last-mile delivery under the ZTO brand.
Founded in 2002, incorporated in the Cayman Islands and headquartered in Shanghai, the company has built one of the largest express-delivery networks in China by parcel volume. Its operational scale is supported by an extensive fleet of self-owned line-haul trucks, a nationwide system of sorting hubs equipped with automated lines, and thousands of pickup and delivery outlets. Beyond standard parcel delivery, ZTO has expanded into higher-value retail parcels and reverse-logistics services, reflecting a gradual shift toward greater service diversification within China’s maturing express-delivery market.
Operations
In 2025 ZTO handled 38.52 billion parcels, a 13.3% year-over-year (YoY) increase, retaining the industry’s top position by volume for the tenth consecutive year. Platform reverse-logistics volumes doubled during the same period.
The first half of 2026 produced revenue of HK$ 32.64 billion (+22.5% YoY) and net income attributable to ordinary shareholders of HK$ 6.06 billion (+31.5% YoY). Parcel volume continued to expand, with market share rising further. Retail parcel volume and reverse-logistics volumes posted strong double-digit growth. The company operated 92 sorting hubs (782 automation lines) and more than 3,600 line-haul routes served by over 10,000 self-owned trucks as of mid-year.
In the second quarter of 2026 parcel volume reached 10.49 billion (+6.5% YoY), market share expanded to approximately 19.9%. Combined unit transportation and sorting costs declined, supported by AI-driven routing, SmartPark monitoring across all transit centers, and expanded automation. Full-year 2026 parcel-volume guidance was revised to a 6–10% increase (40.8–42.4 billion parcels). Capital expenditure for the year is expected to be around HK$ 7.04 billion. Share-repurchase activity continued under the existing authorization, leaving about HK$ 10.67 billion of capacity for buybacks until March 20, 2028.
Beyond its core express-delivery operations, ZTO has continued to expand its service portfolio with the stated aim of becoming an integrated logistics provider. Building on its express network, the company has developed offerings in less-than-truckload (LTL) logistics focused on heavy cargo, international express delivery services in Southeast Asia, Africa and other markets, cross-border freight forwarding, and integrated solutions covering warehousing, distribution and transportation. These expansions form part of a broader ecosystem that also includes aviation, cold-chain and commerce-related services, allowing the company to capture a wider range of customer demand.

Sustained Performance & Conclusion ⚠️
Conversion of ongoing automation and AI investments into durable unit-cost advantages. ⚠️
Ability to sustain market-share gains while industry parcel growth slows. ⚠️
Effective capital allocation between expansion investment, share repurchases, and dividends. ⚠️
ZTO’s position as China’s largest express-delivery operator rests on a scalable network-partner model, sustained market-share gains, and a clear shift toward higher-value services and broader logistics capabilities. The company has demonstrated the ability to grow revenue and profitability even as industry parcel volumes moderate, supported by automation, AI-driven efficiency gains, and expanding contributions from retail parcels, reverse logistics, LTL, and cross-border offerings.
At the same time, the business remains exposed to fuel and labor cost pressures, intense domestic competition, and the broader trajectory of Chinese consumption. The current discount to fair value reflects these structural constraints alongside a soft multi-year share-price record. Whether that gap closes will depend less on near-term volume growth and more on ZTO’s capacity to convert its scale and technology investments into durable cost leadership, while allocating capital effectively between network expansion and returns to shareholders.
